7 Tips for Healthy Travel with Dabney + Taylor

Peek inside for all the travel essentials you need to come back restored and refreshed from your summer travels!

We’ve got the travel bug, and chances are… you do too.

That’s why we’re touching base with our Co-founders, Dabney Poorter, CN, RN + Taylor Dukes, MSN, FNP-BC on their musts for travel to keep health and wellness a priority… while still having all the fun!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

1.Hydrate the day before travel with at least 80 oz of filtered water. On the day of travel, do your best to hit that 80 oz mark again, giving yourself grace for airplane restrictions, etc.

2. Hydration is especially important if you’re heading to the mountains. If you’re one of the lucky ones getting a break from this heat, start the aforementioned recommended water intake hydrate two days before travel and get yo’self a Myers Drip Plus if you’re sensitive to altitude.

3. Speaking of altitude, this post has a ton of pro-tips, but rule A#1 is no booze the first day/night and take it easy on activities. AKA, please do not head straight for Ute Trail and then burn a hole in a seat at Ajax Tavern.

Save that winning itinerary for Day 2, bugaboo.

Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Do not rely on the airport for healthy snacks, and do not rely on gas stations for meals. Duh.

4. Snag some Juice Junkies Energy Balls from R+R before you leave and pack Julie's Real nut butter packets, Chomps beef jerky sticks, Thunderbird bars, fruit and nuts for the road. Your kiddos will be less cranky, and so.will.you.

5. If you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time, we suggest schlepping the immune system essentials just in case: Probiotic, Magnesium, Elderberry Syrup, Zinc, Boiron Cold Calm, and Vitamin D. Psssst all of these are available at R+R or you can find them by shopping our Supplement Shop here.

Tiny but mighty

6. Just as we’re not relying on the road stops to fuel us, we’re not relying on the hotel to provide safe products for hair, face, and body… Enter travel kits!

All of these are available at R+R so call 817.720.6220 or swing by to snag yours today:

  • For the hair: Innersense Travel Trio

  • For the face: Botnia Travel Kit

  • For inevitable stains and cleaning needs: Branch Basics Travel Kit

We like to move it, move it.

7. Find fun ways to exercise in your new destination! Whether it is walking through a local botanical garden, checking out a unique local workout gym, going hiking, strolling the beach barefoot, or renting a bike to see the city - move your thang.

Free yo’ mind

Bonus Tip: For the love, leave the work at home. Grab a good book, a magazine, a devotional, and/or your journal and live life unpluggled. Stress does more damage to the body than anything… Let yourself let go, rest, and reset!

What does wellness mean to you?

As I have become older wellness has become more about where my spirit and mind are and less about what society tells me it should be. I have found I enjoy more things that feed that part of myself like yoga, being outside, spending time with family and friends and less about productivity based activities.

Name three non-negotiables in your life.

  • Quality sleep

  • Positive self talk

  • ONLY Topo Chico in my Ranch Water (no other sparkling will do).

Your fave Instagram accounts to follow?

Morning routine?

Tell my babies good morning, water, exercise, tea if I am having it, always sunscreen and out the door.

Evening routine?

Play with kids, check the garden to see what’s for dinner, cook dinner, we eat outside if we can, bath time, bedtime.

Travel essentials?

All my Christina Jett skin care essentials (I forgot my face wash on our last trip and almost didn’t make it), our GoPro to capture all the memories, my favorite Fort Worth hat and sunscreen, as I’m getting older I really like to travel with my body pillow- ha! If we are traveling with kids things get WAY more complicated.

Instant energy boost?

A nap? Lol just kidding but I really love sleep.

Most used condiment?

Ranch….. always ranch.

Favorite smoothie recipe?

I have really been loving a smoothie with frozen avocados, bananas, blueberries, almond milk, flaxseed, caoco powder and Vital Proteins collagen powder.

How do you take your coffee (or tea)?

100% green tea with lavender honey.

When you feel sickness coming on you...

Sleep… and text Dabney probably lol

My family is the most important thing and always comes first.

We are thrilled to have the fabulous Mada Leigh with us today, and we cannot wait to learn more about her! She’s dropping some major tips below - don’t miss it.

What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness to me is making small changes in my daily life for me and my family that help us feel our best mentally and physically. It’s not something that feels like a task, but it’s a lifestyle. I am the best ME when I take care of myself and nourish my body from the inside out.

Name three non-negotiables in your life.

  • Daily movement- doing something active each day! Doesn’t have to be intense but even a 20-minute walk gives me the biggest boost.

  • Getting quality sleep! I make sleep a priority and strive for 7-hours at least a night.

  • Eating organic, whole food whenever possible.

Morning routine?

It can be wild with two little ones haha, but this is usually what it looks like…

Wake up around 6am (usually around the time my 14-month-old wakes up), have a 16oz cup of room temp lemon water, make a coffee, cook my family breakfast, get my 3.5 year old ready for ½ day Montessori school program, my husband takes her to school around 7:30am, tidy up the house, then my youngest and I go on a long walk before her first nap!

Evening routine?

Serve dinner around 5:30-6pm, playtime/the kids bedtime routine, kids in bed by 7:30pm, relax and catch up with my husband, take a bath and do my skincare routine, stretch for 10 minutes, in bed by 8:30pm, my husband and I typically read and go to bed by 9:30pm.

Travel essentials?

  • One Love Organics Cleansing Oil and makeup remover. A MUST face wash to always have on hand.

  • A robe and hair clip for getting ready.

  • Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil. My absolute favorite body oil for day and night. [PS we sell this at R+R ;)]

Instant energy boost?

Working out!! My virtual training gives me the best energy! I also love Pique Tea for a mid-day iced tea boost.

Most used condiment?

Cholula

Favorite smoothie recipe?

Truthfully, I love Daily Harvest for smoothies. They are all so yummy!

How do you take your coffee (or tea)?

I add frothed nutpods creamer to my coffee with a drizzle of raw, local honey. YUM!

Go-to cocktail?

Margarita!!

3 ingredients/foods you can't live without?

  • Tuna- call me crazy, but I love it haha.

  • Dried Mangos- I could devour a bag in minutes!!

  • Kale- I add it to everything! Smoothies, salads, bowls, you name it!

  • You said three, but I have to add lemons! Add to drinks, salad dressings, the possibilities are endless.

Go-to gift?

A box of all my favorite nontoxic goodies that I use daily. Everyone loves a good nontoxic candle, face serum, body serum, essential oils, etc! Something special about sharing all the things you truly use daily. I also love gifting a good book for friends that like to read.

How do you reset?

A hot bath or a long walk always does the trick!

When you feel sickness coming on you...

Try to get in a sauna to sweat it out, take oregano oil, drink tons of lemon water, sip on bone broth, eat nourishing food, and REST!

What's valuable to you?

Quality time with my family, focusing on the health of everyone in my family, trying to do my part to be take care of our planet, keep things as nontoxic as possible in my daily life.
